After The Storm Seaton Devon

After The Storm Seaton Devon
A week or so ago I found myself not far from home on a small shoot in East Devon.
Seaton is a place Ive visited quite a lot in the last 12 months with my family (when not in lockdown).
Compared to other beaches close to home it provided a little more space to walk safely at a distance and so has become our first choice for a family outing.
When I popped down during my shoot it was obvious there had been a storm in the recent days as the beach had shifted leaving some interesting points of interest that caught my eye.

Moored Off Mandraki

Moored Off Mandraki

"A Glimpse of Peace: Mandraki Awakes Through Ancient Stone”

While photographing St. Paul’s Gate at dawn, I discovered a stone window framing yachts against a golden sunrise. Mandraki Harbour's windmills and St. Nicholas Fortress stood serene, history glowing in the light. A fleeting moment, captured before the scene transformed.

Inspired By 80's Advertising

Inspired By 80's Advertising
I came across this Caravan pitched up in October 2019 and just had to return when the light was right to shoot it.
What inspired me so much was that It reminded me of a desert location the type used for one of those grand Marlboro cigarette billboard adverts of the late 1980s but in fact, it was next to a lovely beach on the island of Rhodes Greece.
It’s funny how certain images you remember being inspired by can still have an impact 30 years later.

Pollarding The Willow

Pollarding The Willow

I captured this image on the way home from a shoot.

I purposely took a long way home across the Somerset Levels and decided to explore a small lane that looked like it could reveal some great locations.

After a 5-minute slow drive, I turned around yet another tight bend and I came across some recently trimmed (Pollarded) Willow trees alongside the lane and ditch.

In the field on the other side of the ditch were piles of wood neatly stacked.

The light was pleasant and I was intrigued so I decided to pull the car over and grab my camera with a long lens to explore the scene.

I know I've mentioned this before but heading out and exploring with no real plan is some of the most enjoyable photography I do.

I don't do it enough but maybe that's why I enjoy it so much when I do.

Evening Light Over Afon Teifi

Evening Light Over Afon Teifi

Evening Light Over Afon Teifi

This week my diary looked a little quieter than the hectic previous 6 weeks or so but that soon changed within one brief phone call.
I was asked by a client if I could travel to West Wales for a couple of days to shoot two urgent jobs that needed completing ASAP.
This work was shooting two amazing holiday properties one on each day hence my overnight stay.
Pembrokeshire in West Wales is approximately 160 miles from my base in South Somerset and not an area I have visited since I was a teenager riding my Vespa Scooter.
I knew or remembered little about the area except it was a beautiful part of the world and a great photography location that I would have plenty of time between shoots to explore and capture some images.
After my first shoot was completed, I decided to explore the coast and take a few snaps of my discoveries and generally just chill and even have a paddle in the surprisingly warm Irish sea!
It's always frustrating to discover an amazing scene in the middle of the day and know that 6 hours earlier or later the light would potentially be so much nicer.
So it was nice to explore a location knowing I was stopping locally and could return in a better light if something caught my eye.
It was a location in Cardigan where my hotel was located that I decided to shoot later that evening.
Cardigan a historic and picturesque town has a wonderful Grade II listed bridge over the river Afon Teifi that is difficult to ignore.
After a brief recee and chat with the locals I found what I thought would be a good viewpoint to capture the evening light that was to backlight and give great shape to the bridge.
I've mentioned before that I prefer the more compressed perspective of slightly longer lenses rather than using wide angled lenses.
In this image to get the width needed to show the scene with the perspective, I wanted from my 70mm lens I captured 9 final frames to build up both image width and height.
Actually it was 27 frames as I captured 3 bridged exposures to create an HDR that I blended to capture the wide dynamic range in the scene.
This has the added benefit of creating a super-resolution image not that I particularly needed that.
You can see a video sample of this on my retouching page.

Morning, Light Enters The Palace

Morning, Light Enters The Palace
Morning, Light Enters The Palace
Morning Light Enters The Palace.Canvas Mocks-6

" I wanted them to also experience the beautiful historic Palace in the warm morning light without the crowds and a more comfortable heat."

"Morning Light Enters The Palace"

In the quiet moments before Rhodes Old Town awakens, a familiar anticipation drew me to the Palace of the Grand Masters.

While I'd photographed these ancient streets countless times in the pre-dawn hours, this morning was different - my family had joined me, enticed by the promise of breakfast and a chance to experience the palace's majesty without the usual crowds.

The Palace, standing sentinel since 8am each day, offers a different kind of welcome in the gentle morning light. This peaceful hour transforms the historic halls into a meditation on light and shadow, where each ray of sunshine reveals centuries of stories etched in stone.

This serene image, now crafted as a large format canvas piece, captures that reflective moment when early light streams through the palace windows, creating an ethereal atmosphere in the ancient corridors.

The warm glow softens the medieval architecture, inviting viewers into a tranquil space where time seems to pause.

What makes this photograph particularly special is the shared experience - not just a solitary photographer's mission, but a family memory woven into the peaceful discovery of this majestic space, before the day's heat and crowds arrived to change its character.

Idyllic Moments At Agios Stefanos

Idyllic Moments At Agios Stefanos Canvas Mocks-7

" I returned here later that day with my family for a picnic under the ruins and a swim in the bay, idyllic is a word made for times like this".

"Dawn's Promise at Agios Stefanos"

After a year of waiting, postponed by COVID-19, I finally stood on the shores of Agios Stefanos in the peaceful hours of dawn. Before me lay a scene that had lived in my imagination - the serene island of Kastri, crowned by the chapel of Agios Nicolaos, emerging from the tranquil Aegean waters.

While the ancient Byzantine ruins of the Basilica of St. Stefan rested behind me on the beach, I found myself completely drawn to this meditative morning vista. For an hour and a half, I remained rooted in place, capturing the unfolding light as it painted the scene in ethereal hues.

Though I had initially planned to fly my drone, the simple beauty before me demanded nothing more than patience and presence.

Later that day, this peaceful spot transformed into a different kind of paradise as my family and I returned for a picnic beneath the ruins and a swim in the gentle waters of the bay. Sometimes a place holds such perfect harmony that only one word truly fits - idyllic.

This extra large canvas brings that reflective moment of dawn serenity into your space, offering a window into one of the Aegean's most soothing vistas.

Diving Into The Dawn At Eli Beach

Diving Dawn Canvas Mocks-4

" The diving tower, known as the Trampoline, was built by the Italians when they occupied the island and provides a 20ft diving tower for those brave enough to use it."

"Legacy in Light: The Rhodes Diving Tower"

There's something magical about those pre-dawn moments when the world still sleeps, except for a few early risers. At 5am, with the temperature already reaching 27 degrees, I packed my gear and set out with my daughter Gracie for Elli Beach's historic diving tower.

The Trampoline, a legacy of Rhodes' Italian occupation, stands as a commanding 20-foot monument against the peaceful morning sky. Built by the Italians during their time on the island, it still beckons brave souls to make the exhilarating leap into the Mediterranean waters below.

This tranquil scene captured the ethereal transformation of night into day, as we watched the gentle dawn light evolve into sunrise.

For an hour, Gracie and I shared this meditative moment, our peaceful photography session only interrupted when a young Italian swimmer unexpectedly appeared naked - creating an amusing memory that still makes us laugh.

This serene image, now available as a large canvas piece, preserves that perfect morning light as it embraces the iconic diving tower, creating a reflective scene that speaks to both Rhodes' rich heritage and the timeless beauty of Mediterranean dawns.
